Hello everyone! My project is called The Oriental Landscape. I was going for a kind of Asian look; similar to the paintings you see at Chinese restaurants…I hope I captured that effect. The three things that I rolled on the dice were landscape, color, and pattern; they inspired me to begin this piece, even though two of the elements I rolled are not included. I was originally planning to do the piece in color, a light, purple-blue color to be exact, maybe with a sunset in the background. But after a few days of working of the piece, I kind of lost the feeling that it needed to be in color, so I decided to leave it as it was. In the end that turned out to be the best decision anyways, keeping it black and white gives it a faint, serene quality that I prefer to color.
I was really hoping to draw the viewers eye to the waterfall in the background, but I do not think that that happened; much to my disappointment. The waterfall does not appear as realistic as the cliffs and trees do; I may try this piece again later to see if I can fix that, maybe I shall even add the sunset next time...

I had alot of fun doing this piece. It is an expression of me in a way, and I like it. I find Art 4 to be so much more fun than the other art classes I have had, there is so much more freedom. I love being able to choose to do my project on and can’t wait to do more pieces.

I like the overall composition of the piece but would have liked to have seen color and pattern kept in the piece. You could have created pattern through placement of the trees and just light colored pencil would have added depth/perspective and more of the oriental art feeling.

There are lots of possibilities with this piece and I hope you explore more options with it.

As you know, I adore most of your work both written and drawn. One of the interesting aspects of this piece is that it takes on an interesting look if viewed upside down. The great thing is that was unintentional, am I right?

You might could use some watercolor pencils and some light water usage to further its oriental look. Perhaps even a border and a few lines of calligraphy would look nice. :)

I like how subtle the lines are in this picture. I couldn't tell there was a waterfall in the background, but I know the picture quality on the blog isn't the greatest, and the fact that I couldn't tell it was a waterfall doesn't take away from the picture at all. I don't know, I just really like how calm this drawing is. All of my pictures generally have crazy bold lines.

ps. I do believe in your original color scheme/the idea for water color pencils, or something, though.

I think it would be really cool if you added a small amount of color to certain parts of this. Maybe shadows on the trees or waterfalls.

Okay, that aside, I can't tell you how much I love this! I think you captured the look your were going for pretty well. I love how dark the water is compared to the rest of the piece. It brings my attintion around the page and keeps me interested.

Girl, this is good. I love your use of shading and how you gave the piece a misty feeling. However, I do think you could use a bit of color in the piece. Otherwise, it's great!

PS. Thanks for the advice on my art. I too believe her forehead is slightly out of proportion and it needs improvement!!!

I think it looks great in pencil but more shading would give it a lot more depth and distinction between different parts of the landscape. That aside, I think you’ve done great capturing the oriental style in this piece.
